Women are a mystery to me. Everything is a mystery to me. If Kierkegaard is correct that God is the unknown, maybe God is ‘feminine’. I wonder sometimes if our cat makes judgments on the world he sees. Why is there life? Or is it that existence could not be without a witness. Or how did we come to have vision?

For reasons which I do not understand, I seemed to have had many more female friends than girl friends. And then I had daughters. I always thought that women were generally smarter than men (with a few notable and familial exceptions).

My mother is one of the smartest people I have ever met. She did not have a lot of formal education but she seemed to be good at anything she tackled. Given the opportunities that my daughters have, I think my mother would have had a huge affect on the world.

I created a bunch of illustrations that I assembled thinking to write a series of stories to go with them. Kind of ass backwards. But I never wrote the stories. Instead I worked on a novel called The Invisible Man, which sits in some file to this day. I have forgotten several manuscripts that I wrote. Some were lost forever in a flood that swept the west end of Toronto. Is it a tragedy? The burning the library of Alexandria by Christians around 390 A.D. was a tragedy. (It has been suggested that if those books had survived and been distributed into Europe, we might have landed on the moon by the year 1000 A.D.)
