Painting on mass produced, printed, usually photographic images is fundamental to my practice. Taking what already exists as my starting point, I then appropriate the image by painting directly on top of it to reinvent it.

Charlotte Bracegirdle (what a mouthful) is an inventive and surprising collage artist. She both adds and subtracts from her work to create wondrous new worlds. (Wondrous should have an ‘e’ in it.) There are a lot of ‘ou’s’ and ‘ah’s’ in her work.

I’ve done art all my life. I was born in Puerto Rico, grew up in New York City where I attended the City University of New York and New York University. I’ve done theatrical and commercial set design as well as graphic design, and I believe that’s reflected in some of my paintings. I am primarily interested in line, geometric shapes, and surface textures often arranged in simple formal compositions. My work sometimes depicts images that consist of flat abstract shapes in representational environments.
