Franz Falckenhaus

One of the things I’ve always loved about collage work was the sense of ‘whimsy’. A kind of silliness. A universe where no great harm can come to you. The universe of Buster Keaton and Charlie Chaplin. This is the universe of Franz Falckenhaus.

Polish artist Franz Falckenhaus never had any formal art training.

Perhaps his outsider status is what makes his collaged cut-ups so intriguing, as they resemble the marriage of a Man Ray photograph and an old edition of LIFE magazine. Using vintage illustrations and found materials, Falckenhaus creates digital collages that are witty, naughty and everything in between. Pin-ups appear demonically possessed while buff, retro athletes gain supernatural capabilities.
