speaking as a photographer. I don’t think it looks anything like a photograph, mere or otherwise. But here’s the question: what’s the difference between what something looks like and what it actually is?

Well the word ‘mere’ does sound like I am diminishing the art of photography. My apologies. As far as the difference between what something looks like and the real thing, Immanuel Kant tried to deal with this problem (phenomena and noumena) in his The Critique of Pure Reason. Its a fascinating question.
