Paul W. Ruiz

Paul W. Ruiz I have been slow to come around to the type of painting Mr. Ruiz produces. Seemed like there was always a painting beneath all that paint. Reminded me a bit of nature – trees, fields, rocky fields where if you looked long enough you would find a human face or figure. But there is something else there and I am vaguely aware of it. As if we were engaged in both the perception of an image as well as the perception of the perception. (Like Kant’s noumena and phenomena)

Isolde Woudstra

The edge of a knife. You run it along your tongue. Does it bleed? That’s what Ms. Woudstra’s photographs remind me. Its a constant sense of danger. Of harm done. Or the prospect of injury. Always malevolent.
