Maarten Kleyne

2 08 2014

Living in Belgium for 4 years I have an affection for the people of the lowlands, both the Dutch and Flemish. There is a rich tradition of visual art in these countries. Painting for the Dutch/Belgium is like poetry to the Russians and English, jazz to America. One of these artists in Maarten Kleyne. His work is very visual, but elusive at the same time. His imagination seems to work like the morning mist that sometimes falls upon the lowlands.

Drowning

DrowningAs a child I heard horrendous stories (or imagined them) of sick Africans being thrown overboard from slave ships in the middle of the ocean. I could never get rid of that image of the ship disappearing in the distance and me in the water.
