Rudolf Hausner

3 10 2013

Hausner was a war veteran. After the war he and others created surrealist groups. Was this a way to deal with the memories of the war? I don’t see much evidence of that in his work. What I see is a man who is trying to create some rational explanation for the world. Through the sub-conscious. (I’m not sure that the sub-conscious exists. But there certainly were nightmares.) His work attempts to be fun. But there is no frivolity. That I can see in my limited exposure. Fun becomes serious. Everything seems balanced. The existence of the random seems under control. Or am I reading into his work? That’s the thing about surrealists/collagists, you can’t help yourself.
