Christian Schad

17 01 2012

Christian Schad was a dadaist. He lived during the rise of the Nazis in Germany. Much of his work is preoccupied with sex, decadence, and death. Human beings were alone.  Isolation. You can feel that the social relationships have disappeared and that lives were lived in lonely withdrawal. Was this true of the general population? Probably not. And is every impression of the art created tainted by our knowledge of the times? The rise of fascism. The death camps. The coming war. Or was the art prophetic?

Schad’s work can be edgy. Especially if you compare it with the pristine ‘americana’ of the Hollywood cinema at the time.
