Chapter Thirty Six: Flight

The stranger moves around the burning ship looking for Josh. He hears barking. General comes running up to him. The stranger rubs his collar.

The stranger: “Find our property, boy.”

The dog takes off.  the boat has begun to drift into a thick fog. The stranger hears a man screaming. He runs up the deck of the boat and finds the General all over a fallen Josh.

Josh: “Get the dog off me!”

The stranger: “Down boy!”

The dog gets off Josh who climbs to his feet.

Josh: “I will not go with you. I’d rather die.”

The stranger: “I hope that won’t be necessary.”

Josh: “Can’t  you hear the falls? This boat is a death trap.”

The stranger looks around. There is only the mist, a fog with a roar. All about him the boat burns. Suddenly he realizes that there may be no escape from death. As he turns back to Josh, the runaway slave leaps off the boat into the mist.
